2016 has seen our Industrial Technology & Design department expand into offering a Certificate I in Building & Construction. Partnering with Train Assess Australia (TAA) has allowed VPSHS students access to industry standard equipment and experienced tuition in carpentry, landscaping, tiling & plumbing skills. Their current project is to convert a storage shed into an outdoor classroom for themselves and future generations of construction students.
On Tuesday 24th May, TAA brought out a Skidsteer to teach our grade 11 & 12 students earthmoving and levelling skills. The day was a huge success, with each student gaining competency in both excavating and using hand & power tools. A lot of safe fun was had in the process, and the area around our shed has now been prepared for pouring a concrete slab, improving the drainage in the area from surrounding bushland, and installing a retaining wall.
The skills that these classes are leaning and the years of wisdom TAA bring to us are setting up our students for success. Trades are currently crying out for quality apprentices & workers that exhibit our school values of Respect, Integrity & Responsibility, and the trainers from TAA were impressed with the courteous manner and hard work ethic that our students displayed on the day. Watch this space for more exciting projects as we plan to use our skills to improve the grounds at VPSHS and make our school an even greater place to be.
