Thursday 2 April provided wet conditions for our school’s annual Inter-House Cross Country and Mini-games carnival. Unfortunately this meant that the mini-games component of the carnival had to be cancelled. However, only extreme weather conditions were going to stop the cross country component from going ahead!

As if someone had planned the most epic of practical jokes, the heavens opened up and the rain began to pour just as the cross country races were about to begin. Fortunately, as committed students prepared themselves for racing in the wet, the rain subsided and overall conditions improved dramatically. This is enabled all races to go ahead successfully, allowing for a range of very competitive races across the age groups. Student participation and spirit was tremendous once again.

The winning House is yet to be revealed, as we look forward to an upcoming full-school assembly presentation but our Age Champions and first place getters can certainly be acknowledged. Congratulations to Ashlee Attenborough (12 Girls), Lachlan Fay (12 Boys), Des’Ree Barnes (13 Girls), Connor Duffy (13 Boys), Katelin Parkes (14 Girls), Corbin Gibbons (14 Boys), Jade Ellenger (15 Girls), Luke Harvey (15 Boys), Myka Arthur (16 Girls), Devon Shoobert (16 Boys), Emily Gage (Open Girls), and Luke Bellamy (Open Boys) on their outstanding individual efforts.

Friday 24 April featured the very first combined Primary and Secondary schools District Cross Country Carnival, which also included two more secondary schools recently added to the Bayside district. This meant that competition was raised to a new level but as always VPSHS arrived at this event, held at Capalaba Regional Park, with a committed group of students ready to give their best for the school. They certainly did not disappoint, with every team member putting in a huge effort in their respective races.

At the end of the day, although tired and sore, each student could be proud of their efforts. Our school’s final overall finishing place of 9th out of 12 schools was perhaps not a true indication of overall results, given that there was only a handful of points that separated us from schools as high as sixth.

Particular congratulations must go to Connor Duffy (Year 8), Luke Harvey (Year 10), Devon Shoobert (Year 11) and Luke Bellamy (Year 12) who all finished inside the top 10 in their respective races, gaining them selection in the District Cross Country team. Special mention must also go to Scott Marriott (Year 9), Corbin Gibbons (Year 9), George Edwards (Year 11), Stephanie Kirk (Year 8), Des’Ree Barnes (Year 8), Katelin Parkes (Year 9) and Emily Gage (Year 12), who all finished inside the top 20 in their respective races. Well done to all students.
