Inter-school Sport in 2016 was full of many amazing highlights. Every week this
season a large number of boys and girls teams, ranging from Year 7/8 all the
way to Year 11/12, put in the ‘hard yards’ on the training paddock in
preparation for tough weekly competition against seven other schools in the
wider Bayside district.
good: At the conclusion of the season, it was awesome to see the Year 9
Netball, Year 10 Boys Soccer, Year 10 Girls Soccer, Open Boys Soccer and Open
Boys Basketball teams all finish in the top four of their respective
competitions. If the finals system included semi-finals, all of these teams
would have been in contention!
great: It’s no secret the VPSHS Vikings AFL excellence program has seen our
school become a powerhouse in district AFL competitions. This winter season,
that couldn’t have been more evident with our Year 7/8, Year 9 and Year 10 AFL
teams claiming a clean sweep of all available AFL district premierships! Both
junior teams had to work extremely hard in their finals, narrowly edging out
Redlands College in both games. The Year 10 team were supreme, dominating all
opposition week in week out. All in all, three district premierships in AFL is
no doubt a special sporting highlight of this winter season and indeed the
fantastic: Prior to this winter season, VPSHS had never won a district premiership
in girls volleyball, let alone made a final. This year’s Open Girls Volleyball
team changed all of that! Through hard work and training, this team went through
the season having only lost one game. This earnt them a deserved spot in the
district final against the only team that had beaten them all season. Beating
Redlands College was always going to be a massive challenge. However, with the
majority of this team gaining confidence from their successful Schools Cup
campaign just a week prior, they approached the game with real belief and
energy. In a mighty effort, the girls came back from one set down to win the
game 2 sets to 1. They had to make history and they did it! Despite losing to
an excellent Woodridge SHS team in Round 2 of the Metropolitan Finals, we are
proud to bring home a fourth and very special winter season district
premiership in Open Girls Volleyball.
so close! District premiers from this year’s summer sport season, the Open
Girls Basketball team, entered Round 2 of the Metropolitan Finals against
Marsden SHS with hopes of claiming a fourth metro title for our school in
basketball. After taking the first half to compose themselves, they very
quickly went to work cutting Marsden’s 12 point lead. After bringing scores
level in the dying seconds of the game (31-31), Marsden were awarded a very
controversial foul call. This gifted them with the points they needed to win
the game 31-34. Our girls were understandably devastated losing the game in
such a fashion but can hold their heads high for the way they never gave up.
Next year will bring with it a chance at redemption!
Thanks to all
coaches, students and parents in making this winter sport season one to
remember for years to come.
