Almost through Term 1 already! Dance has gotten
off to a flying start for 2017 and it has been a pleasure to witness and work
with the creative and talented students here at Victoria Point SHS.
Congratulations also to the students who successfully auditioned for our 3
troupes - Contemporary, Tap and Senior Troupe; it's very exciting to see the
dances taking shape already!
Year 7 and 8 Program of Excellence students
are learning two dances this term - a Harry Potter themed hip hop
dance and a contemporary dance about people standing up to and against the
oppression they face. In Year 9, it’s been a pleasure to teach the
enthusiastic Program of Excellence dance students who have been learning a hip hop
dance and also creatively contributing to the choreography. Year 10
Program of Excellence dance students have the
amazing opportunity to be working with award-winning guest choreographer,
Beccy Fernando, on a new hip hop routine. In Year 11, we have been focusing on
the functions of dance, specifically Artistic and Ritual, in connection with
the internationally renowned contemporary dance company, Bangarra Dance
Theatre. Bangarra is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
organisation and "widely acclaimed for its powerful dancing, distinctive
theatrical voice and utterly unique soundscapes, music and design". Finally
the Year 12's are delving into the world of Musical Theatre, writing about the
transformation of T.S. Eliot's poems into one the longest running musicals, Cats, and dancing up a storm in A Chorus Line, the musical which really gets to the heart of highs and
lows of a dancer's life. I can’t wait to
see the finished dances in each year level and troupe!
