It’s only still very early in the year but already so many
students at VPSHS are achieving great things in sport. Some students to make
mention of include the following:
Luke Harvey (Year 10), Katelin Parkes (Year 9) and Connor
Duffey (Year 7) are all ready to put their endurance to the test when they
represent Metropolitan East at the upcoming Queensland Secondary Schools State
Triathlon Championships. This is a fantastic achievement and the entire school
community is cheering for them.
Bocce is a rapidly rising sport across the world and as such
is recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee and Australian Sports
Commission. Students Carlo Bunin (Year 9) and Marco Bunin (Year 11) have taken
to this unique sport and are excelling! This year both boys have already been
to a training day in Melbourne after being personally invited by the Bocce
Federation of Australia. This preparation will prove valuable, as Carlo and
Marco will be participating in the Australian Junior Open (17th to 19th April),
representing Queensland in their respective age divisions. If things continue
to progress, these boys have their eye on Australian representation in the
World Championships in the not too distant future. We congratulate Carlo and
Marco on these wonderful achievements and wish them the best of luck!
Year 11 student Jimmy Regan has taken
a shine to the ‘distant cousin’ of Bocce, that of course being Bowls, and has been
selected in the Queensland Police State Bowls Team. He will now compete at the Australian Police
Bowls Championships in March. This is an
excellent achievement, and experience for Jimmy and one which the school is
excited about.
Last but certainly not least,
2014 Sportsman of the Year Mitchell Henning (Year 12) has been selected in the
Australian Junior Ice Hockey side to compete at the World Championships. He
will be training and competing in the Czech Republic and Serbia in March. This is an amazing opportunity for Mitchell on
an international sporting stage and we wish him many successes, as he follows
his dreams.
